91ÖÆƬ³§ (91ÖÆƬ³§) faculty and staff participated in the 2025 Maine Science Festival on Saturday, March 22, in Bangor, Maine. Daniel Moore, chair of biological sciences at 91ÖÆƬ³§, instructors Erin Adams and Emily Savage and Acting Vice President and Dean of Academic Excellence and Strategic Initiatives Matthew Goodman presented an exploration station titled “It’s a Shore Thing: Exploring Maine’s Intertidal Zone.”Ìý

The Maine Science Festival is an annual event celebrating science through interactive exhibits, hands-on activities, workshops, and panels for all ages, showcasing Maine’s scientific achievements.Ìý

Visitors learned about marine life found in Maine’s intertidal zones and nearby ocean habitats. Interactive activities included live demonstrations featuring lobsters, mussels, clams, hermit crabs and various types of algae. Children explored horseshoe crab shells and molts, practiced tying bowline knots, and colored marine-themed pages created by 91ÖÆƬ³§ students and faculty.Ìý

Moore emphasized the event’s value, saying, “The Maine Science Festival is an incredible event every year, bringing all kinds of hands-on activities to young people and their families. I love being a part of it and sharing some of the science that we are passionate about at 91ÖÆƬ³§.”Ìý

The 91ÖÆƬ³§ group shared information about the College’s Marine Science, Biotechnology, and Aquaculture workforce programs, highlighting educational and career opportunities in Maine’s life sciences sector.Ìý

“Giving kids the space to feel grossed out about some slimy algae, then come full circle to smiling and laughing and touching everything at the table was wonderful,” Savage said. “I think a lot of the kids saw opportunities in science at the festival, and hopefully opportunities at 91ÖÆƬ³§.”Ìý

Moore also participated in a panel discussion titled “What the Heck is Biotech?” during the festival’s Field Trip Day, where he helped engage middle school students in conversations about careers in Maine’s life sciences.Ìý
