Fire Science, EMS students come face-to-face with potential employers
Fire Science and EMS students came face-to-face with potential employers at 91制片厂鈥檚 eighth annual Fire-EMS Roundtable event.
Dozens of students met with chief officers from 12 Maine and New Hampshire fire-EMS departments during the roundtable events April 11 and 12 at the McKernan Center.
Students both days met with chiefs and other high-ranking officers in short 10-minute face-to-face sessions to pitch themselves and pick up tips on what fire and EMS department are looking for in the hiring process.
This year鈥檚 attendance was the largest in the Roundtable鈥檚 history, said Fire Science program chair Steve Willis. With unemployment at a historic low in Maine, fire and EMS departments are looking hard for qualified candidates.
鈥淭his is a chance to meet prospective employees,鈥� said Jerry LaMoria, a deputy fire chief in Scarborough who has attended the Roundtables for several years. 鈥淚 can get to know the students, and they can meet with departments individually.鈥�
Departments represented at the events were from Bath, Brunswick, Portland, Saco, Sanford, Scarborough, South Portland and Westbrook in Maine, as well as Dover and Keene, N.H.

Encore job-shadow day at Martin鈥檚 Point Health Care
91制片厂 students this month visited Martin鈥檚 Point Health Care for the second straight semester for a job-shadow day to learn more about the inner workings of the healthcare organization.
Students from both 91制片厂 and the University of Southern Maine visited Martin鈥檚 Point in Portland on April 6 to get a first-hand, up-close look at different departments. Participating 91制片厂 students are enrolled in the Health Sciences, Nursing, Information Technology, Cyber Security and Business Administration programs.
Martin鈥檚 Point hosted a similar job-shadow event in November for 91制片厂 and USM students that was such a success that a second job-shadow day was arranged for this semester.
Martin鈥檚 Point provides both clinical healthcare services and health insurance plans. The nonclinical departments range from administration, marketing and communications to compliance and legal affairs, operations and community relations.
Students were assigned to spend time in Martin鈥檚 Point different departments, including care delivery, health care center operations, information security, IT infrastructure and human resources.
Participating 91制片厂 students were Beth Gardner, Christopher Burwell, David Brooks, Jonathan Moore, David Brown, Nicole Obuchon, Merrick Banks, Julie Kambali, and Loreal Legare.

Photo students put on a show
Photography II students are exhibiting photos that demonstrate their work with the use of film cameras and alternative printing methods.
Ten students in Christian Farnsworth鈥檚 class have been experimenting this semester with 35mm and 120mm film cameras, as well as cyanotype and scanner printing processes.
The exhibit 鈥攏ow on display in the Learning Commons lounge in the South Portland Campus Center 鈥� features 21 images that were printed, matted and framed by the students. The show opened in early April and will remain in place through May 11.
You can meet and talk to the students about their work at an artists鈥� reception from 5-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, in the Learning Commons.
Students in the show are Kate Bennett, Tim Britting, Tyler Dickinson, Zach Harder, Jonathan Herrick, Samantha Jamison, Diana Jenkerson, Sov Kong, Devan Marr and Chelsea St. Pierre.

- The Short Story (ENGL185/HONR 285). This course is a study of the modern short story from its origins in the early 19th century to its current form. The class focuses on the history of the short story, how it has reflected the social and cultural issues of the day, and its use as a mode of personal expression. The class includes readings and is writing-intensive. Tues & Thur, 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m.
- Social History of the Civil War and Reconstruction (HIST 165/HONR 165). This course explores the Civil War and Reconstruction period after the war, the experience in both the Union and Confederacy, and the social and political impact of the war and its aftermath. Tues & Thur 1:30-2:45 p.m.
- Nature and Culture (IDST 150/HONR 150). This interdisciplinary course uses the combined perspectives of sciences such as biology, ecology and economics together with history, philosophy and literature to study how cultures and individuals interact with nature. Wed 9-11:45 a.m.
- Emergency Medical Technician (EMST 110). This course on the Midcoast Campus in Brunswick gives students the entry-level knowledge and skills necessary to provide emergency medical responder care to patients. Upon completion, students are eligible to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification examination. Wed, 5-9 p.m. plus one Saturday.
- Advanced Emergency Medical Technician I-HY (EMST 200). This course on the Midcoast Campus in Brunswick provides students the foundational-level knowledge and skills to provide advanced emergency medical care and transportation to patients. Students must already have a Maine EMS Emergency Medical Technician license. Tues 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. (with partially online)
- Online Beginning Spanish I (SPAN 101 D1). For students who can鈥檛 make it to campus, this flexible online course emphasizes listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. Appropriate for students with less than two years of high school Spanish.
91制片厂 to have strong presence at Portland art exhibit
An art show inspired by album covers will feature work by current and former 91制片厂 art instructors, a current 91制片厂 student and an 91制片厂 alumna.
Eighteen artists 鈥� at least seven who have connections to 91制片厂 鈥� will exhibit around 30 pieces of artwork at the 鈥淪pinning Album Covers鈥� exhibit at Think Tank Coworking, located at 533 Congress Street in Portland. An opening reception will be held from 6-8:30 p.m. Saturday, April 21. A second reception will be held during the First Friday Art Walk, from 5-8 p.m. Friday, May 4.
The show was conceived by 91制片厂 painting and drawing instructor John Knight, who will have his work on exhibit at the show. Other participating artists with 91制片厂 connections include current and former 91制片厂 instructors Jeff Badger, Emily Trenholm, Nathaniel Meyer and Cassie Jones, current student Mya Burrage and art department alumna Maia Snow.
Knight said the show allows the artists to use albums and album art to spark ideas. Jeff Badger, for example, is painting directly on old album covers to change them.
鈥淪ome artists are reinterpreting the album art,鈥� Knight said. 鈥淪ome are inspired by the music.鈥�
